HEAVY HORSES AT UMBERLEIGH - Sunday 6th September

On Sunday 6th September the Hunt Supporters are organising a trip to Umberleigh to visit Jonathan Warter and family at Higher Biddacott Farm for a talk and tour on Jonathan's life time of experience of starting and working with heavy horses. From the prairies of Canada, to film work and working with horses on home soil Jonathan has a breath and depth of knowledge as well as a passion for the heavy horse. A praper (as they say in Devon) Devonshire cream tea is also on the agenda at Higher Biddacot – which comes highly recommended and the Fox and Hounds Pub at Eggesford Station is ideally situated on the way home for an early supper. More details to follow as they come in.

COUNTY SHOWS - Inter Hunt Relay Results

On Friday May 22nd Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt competed alongside 12 other Hunt teams at the Devon County Show, in the Inter Hunt Relay event.  The Devon County Show relay event consists of 2 riders, 2 runners and a terrier. Both the riders and runners have a course of jumps / obstacles to tackle, and the winning team will complete the course in the quickest time without incurring any faults.

Riding and running in the Spooners team were Claire Bellamy riding Lisbon, Lucy Hawker riding Shannon, Henry Ware runner no.1, David Crocker runner no.2 and Whisky the Terrier.

The team turned out immaculately for the Tack & Turnout competition, which they won. No mean feat considering both horses were greys!

Next up the Master competed in the Horn Blowing competition and Spooners took 5th place. Just as the competition was finishing there was a surprise for the Master - a lovely birthday cake!  She had managed to keep it quiet all day, but suddenly all competitors and spectators were singing Happy Birthday.

On to the main event - The relay competition. Our team were riding and running in the second to last heat. As always, the heats proved to be fast and furious, but there were lots of poles falling and quite a few refusals. The Spooners runners and riders produced a polished and quick round, with only one hiccup when Lucy's young mare glanced off the second fence, but a quick turn and she was away again. The star of the show was Whisky the Terrier who ran an enthusiastic round with David to finish our relay round.  Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt finished in second place overall, behind Devon & Somerset Staghounds for the second year running, but it was extremely close.

Well what a fantastic day at the Royal Cornwall Show on 4th June - in a hotly contested Inter Hunt Relay event, Spooners Bog Hoppers came 4th & The Spooners Granite Bashers 7th.  At our 2nd County Show of 2015, Spooners Bog Hoppers took 1st place in the Tack & Turnout prize whilst the Granite Bashers were 3rd.

Congratulations to all riders - Bog Hoppers: Claire Bellamy, Lucy Hawker, Ellie Liddle, and Henry Ware.  Granite Bashers: Emily Harland, Lynn Pridham, Julie Vivien, and Becky McArthur.

Thanks to Kate Shobrook and her team who made it all possible
