Alan Hughes – Kennelman 1987 - 2009

Spooner’s and West Dartmoor Hunt is very sad to lose tremendous hunt stalwart Alan Hughes.  Alan has packed his wellies and ridden off on his wobbly bike from kennels for the last time so we all want say a huge thank you to someone who has, in the face of not a few adversities, always been smiley and perky as he cared for the hounds. Alan has been a regular at the kennels doing the grubbiest jobs in the worst weather for the longest time, lured away by the siren call of Cornwall Farmers. For the last 22 years everyone who has ever been near the S&WD kennels and hounds knows what a dedicated kennelman Alan has been.  The lad from Widnes came down to Devon, discovered the joy of caring for the noble hound and has put more hours into the care of the S&WD pack over the years than anyone. Thank you, Alan, for your inimitable approach to life, without you many a new huntsman would have been a little lost. The hounds would echo our thanks. All contributors to the ‘Alan Hughes Fund’, to be presented to him at the Puppy Show on 5th July as our way of saying ‘thank you’ to for all the work he has put in over the years, should get in touch with Chairman Helen Silcock 01822 841005
